太陽の光あふれる南カルフォニアからこんにちは！国際交流基金 ロサンゼルス日本文化センターのThomasです！

I want to share with you a program we organize called the JET Memorial Invitation Program (JET-MIP), which was started last year after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, to commemorate the lives of two Americans participating in the JET program named Taylor Anderson and Montgomery Dickson who sadly lost their lives during the disaster.
今回は国際交流基金が主催した「米国 JET 記念高校生招へい事業」というプログラムをご紹介しますね。東日本大震災の後、昨年スタートしたプログラムで、JETプログラムに参加されていたTaylor Anderson さんとMontgomery Dicksonさんという二人のアメリカ人を追悼するためのプログラムです。お二人は本当に残念なことに震災でお亡くなりになりました。

Participants for this program were selected from schools all across the United States and they have all been studying Japanese all throughout high school and most had never been to Japan. Their first stop was in Los Angeles where they participated in a pre-departure orientation at our office. Then it was off to Japan.
全米各地の高校から選ばれ、このプログラムに参加した高校生たちは、みなさん日本語を勉強してはいるものの、日本を訪れたことはありませんでした。そこで、まずはロサンゼルスにある私たちのオフィスで出発前のオリエンテーションに参加し、日本へと旅立って行きました。

During their initial stay, the participants learned about the institute, the JET program, and even some Tohoku dialect. They also spent some time making a collage showing various landmarks in the United States and cities where they are from. This was later presented to the elementary schools they visited. Then it was off to the Tohoku region.
オリエンテーションでは、参加者は国際交流基金 関西国際センターやJETプログラムについて、そしてなんと東北弁についても学びました。そして、アメリカのランドマークや自分たちの地元の街のランドマークのコラージュを作成したりもしました。このコラージュは、日本を訪れた際に小学校で披露されました。そしてこのオリエンテーションの後、高校生たちは東北へと向かったのでした。

While in the Tohoku region, they visited an elementary school and also participated in the first ever high school summit with students from two local high schools in Rikuzentakata. The topic of the summit was how they can work together for the future and after the discussions; the students presented their findings. This was a good opportunity for the participants to exchange ideas with their counterparts in Japan and make some new friends in the process.
東北滞在中、高校生たちは小学校を訪れ、陸前高田市の地元の高校2校の高校生と初の高校生サミットなるものに参加しました。サミットでは、「未来へ向かって共にできること」をテーマにディスカッションを行い、自分たちが調べて分かったことなどを発表しました。アメリカ人高校生にとって、日本の高校生と意見交換できるよい機会となったようです。サミットを通じて、新しい友情を育んだ高校生もいました。

The last few days in Tohoku were spent orienteering in Sendai and then it was off to Ishinomaki where the participants visited the local elementary school where Taylor Anderson taught and also Taylor’s Bunko (Reading corner), which was created in her memory. Later that day they had an exchange with the Kiwi Club, an English conversation group where Taylor taught and made friends. This event wrapped up the Tohoku portion of the trip as the participants returned to Sendai that night and flew back to Osaka the following day.
東北滞在の後半、高校生たちは仙台でのオリエンテーションに参加しました。その後、石巻に移動し、Taylor Andersonさんが英語を教えていた地元の小学校とTaylor さんを追悼して設けられたTaylor’s Bunko（読書コーナー）を訪れました。同じ日にTaylorさんが英語を教え、親交があった英会話サークル「Kiwi Club」と交流しました。このイベントをもって東北訪問は終了し、参加者たちは夜には仙台へ戻り、翌日仙台から大阪へと飛行機で旅立ちました。

Upon their return, they paid a visit to a local High School where they met their host brother or sister. Together, they travelled to the Consulate General of the United States in Osaka to talk about themes relating to international diplomacy. After visiting the Consulate, the students parted ways and the next day was spent in the classroom going over the Tohoku trip, learning Osaka dialect, and preparing for the weekend homestay.
大阪に戻ってから、高校生たちは地元の高校を訪れ、ホストブラザー・シスターたちと会いました。大阪のアメリカ総領事館を訪問し、国際外交に関するテーマについて話をする機会を得ました。総領事館を訪れた後、高校生たちは別行動をし、翌日は教室にて東北訪問をふり返ったり、大阪弁を学んだり、週末のホームスティへ向けて準備をしたりしました。

The big weekend finally arrived when the American students met their host families for a weekend of cultural experience in the Kansai region. When they returned from their homestay, the cultural experience continued at the Institute with workshops covering Wadaikos and Yukatas. On the final day at the institute, preparations began for the trip home and also for the completion ceremony. After the introductory speeches, the participants had a final chance to talk with their host families and even performed a song and dance. The night ended with final goodbyes and the next day, the group departed Osaka for the wrap-up meeting in Los Angeles.
そして、ついにその時がやってきました！アメリカ人高校生がホストファミリーと共に関西地方で異文化体験をする週末がやってきたのです。ホームスティから戻ってからも、和太鼓や浴衣ワークショップなどなど、国際交流基金関西国際センターでの異文化体験は続くのでした。センターでの最終日、帰国準備が始まり、終了式が開催されました。開式のスピーチに続いて、高校生たちはホストファミリーと最後におしゃべりをしたり、歌やダンスを披露したりしました。こうして、お別れの夜は過ぎ、高校生たちはロサンゼルスで今回のプログラムを総括するため、翌日帰国の途につきました。

At the wrap up meeting, the participants presented their experiences in Japan. Many talked about their eye opening experience, the friendly people they met during the trip and the new friends they made. This experience motivated them more to continue studying Japanese and eventually participate in exchange programs such as the JET program just like Taylor Anderson and Montgomery Dickson. After the meeting, the participants had one more night together as the program slowly came to a close. The following day, each participant would leave just as they had arrived and return back to their hometowns all across the United States.
ラップアップミーティングでは、参加者たちは日本で経験したことについてプレゼンをしました。多くの高校生たちが、初めて経験して驚いたこと、日本滞在中に出会った人たちのフレンドリーさ、新しく生まれた友情などについて触れました。今回のプログラムを経験し、高校生たちは日本語の勉強を続けたいとの思いをよりいっそう強くし、Taylor AndersonさんやMontgomery DicksonさんのようにJETプログラムなどの交流プログラムに参加したいとの声も聞かれました。ミーティングのあった日の夜は、もう一晩共に過ごし、プログラムの終わりがだんだんと近づいてきたのでした。翌日、参加者たちは初めてロサンゼルス日本文化センターにやって来た時と同じように、全米各地の地元の街へとそれぞれに戻っていきました。

Auspeaks Japanese

Beginning just three and a half years ago, with only three members, Auspeak is at the hub of Sydney’s language and cultural exchange between Australia and Japanese people. Meeting in a safe and casual context in a central Sydney Hotel, Auspeak is a friendly social gathering allowing Australians and Japanese to practise speaking Japanese and English, respectively. However as its members will attest to, Auspeak is much more than just a fortnightly language exchange event. More importantly it promotes cultural exchange and understanding and is a testament to numerous long standing inter-cultural friendships.
Auspeakは、ほんの3年半前、たった3人のメンバーで始まりました。それが今ではシドニーにおいてオーストラリア人・日本人間の語学交流・文化交流の中心にまでなりました。Auspeakは、シドニーホテルのくつろぎの空間を利用した社交的でフレンドリーな集まりで、オーストラリア人と日本人とが日本語と英語を練習するための場を提供しています。けれど、参加者の皆さんがおっしゃるとおり、Auspeakは2週間に一度の単なるランゲージ・エクスチェンジの場ではないんですよ。文化交流や異文化理解を深めるということに力を入れていて、文化を越えて友情は続くのだということを証明してくれています。

Now with a regular attendance of about fifty people, even the founder John is astounded at the growing success of Auspeak. “I started it because after returning from living in Japan, my Japanese friends in Sydney kept complaining they had no opportunity to meet locals. And I too wanted to keep up my Japanese so I wouldn’t forget it upon returning home.’ And so began the simple yet effective concept of Auspeak.
現在は50名ほどが定期的に会に出席してくれていて、発起人のJohnでさえ、Auspeakのこの成功に驚いているくらいです。「私がAuspeakをスタートしたきっかけは、日本からオーストラリアに帰国した際、多くの日本人の友だちがオーストラリア人と知り合うチャンスがないと不満を漏らしていたことです。私自身、日本語力を維持したいというのもありましたし、帰国に当たって日本語を忘れたくなかったのです。ということで、シンプルではあるけれども効果的なAuspeakを始めたのでした」

The meetings follow a constructive formula, where half hour time slots are alternated between English and Japanese, ensuring all participants can practise their language of choice. With no monetary membership fee, all are welcome and all that is required is a smile! Upon arrival members are given a short bilingual printout, which they are encouraged to fill out with five new words they have learnt from that day’s conversations. And of course the most important rule is to mingle! Interacting with lots of new people and engaging in interesting, often humorous conversations is all part of the fun!
Auspeakの構成は次のとおり。会の半分は、英語か日本語を選んで、参加者全員が自ら選んだ言語の練習ができるようになっています。会費は必要ありません。ひとつだけ必要なことは、、、笑顔です！笑顔さえあれば誰でもWelcomeです！会場に到着したら、英語・日本語で表記された簡単なプリントが参加者たちに配布されます。その用紙にその日の会話で知った新しい単語を5つ記入してもらうことになっています。一番たいせつなルールは、もちろん、たくさんの人と会話すること！たくさんの人たちと出会い、おもしろおかしい会話を交わすということが何よりも楽しいことなんですよ！

Auspeak sees an eclectic mix of participants. Sprawling across half of the ground floor area of a popular Sydney Hotel, there is always a constant flow of lively chatter. At times it seems like a party, with people almost screaming over raucous laughter and excitement in order to remain audible! Miyuki Sato, a second timer at Auspeak, loves this casual and fun way of learning compared to the formal environment of her Sydney Language Institute, where she studies English on a daily basis. “I like meeting and talking with Australians so I can learn natural English and it’s fun here! Last time we went and tried salsa dancing after class together!” As evidence she is learning useful every day idioms, one of her newly learnt phrases of the day was “spread the word”, which ironically epitomises exactly what she has done since discovering Auspeak.
Auspeakには実に様々な人が参加されています。街でも人気のSydney Hotelのグランドフロアの半分を占めて、たくさんの人が絶え間なくおしゃべりをしています。時にはパーティのような盛り上がりを見せ、自分の声が騒々しい笑い声にかき消されないようにと、ほとんど叫んでいるかのような声でおしゃべりしています（笑）。Auspeakに参加するのは2度目だというMiyuki Satoさんは、カジュアルな雰囲気で楽しく学ぶことができるAuspeakが大好きだそうです。ちなみに、Satoさんが毎日英語を勉強しているというSydney Language Instituteは、もっとフォーマルな感じらしいです。「自然な英語を学ぶことができるので、Auspeakの集まりでオーストラリア人に会っておしゃべりするのが楽しいんです！前回は会の後に、みんなでサルサを踊りに行きました！」どうやら、Satoさんは日常生活で役立つイディオムを学んでいるようです。直近で学んだフレーズは、ズバリ「言葉を広める」というもの。図らずも彼女がAuspeakと出会って以来、してきたことですね。

Australia is renowned as a desirable destination for foreigners wanting to learn English, Sydney is often advertised as a city of golden sandy beaches, a picturesque harbour and cute cuddly koalas enticing thousands of temporary and permanent Japanese visitors yearly. But perhaps more importantly, Auspeak ensures Japanese people in Australia experience something which can’t be advertised on paper, an authentic Aussie Sunday get-together, chatting over a drink and having a laugh. No wonder Auspeak is the talk of the town!
オーストラリアは英語を勉強するのに理想的な国として、オーストラリア以外の国の人たちの間で評判です。シドニーは、光あふれる砂浜のビーチ、まるで絵画のようなシドニー湾の風景、かわいらしくて思わず抱っこしたくなるコアラなどが広告されることが多く、毎年たくさんの日本人旅行客やオーストラリアに永住したいという日本人を引寄せています。けれど、それ以上にたいせつなことは、Auspeakがオーストラリアに暮らす日本人が広告だけでは分からない、リアルなオーストラリア人との親交を体験できるということです。それは飲み物片手におしゃべりし、思い切り笑うというリアルなコミュニケーションです。なるほど、、、Auspeakが話題になるわけです！

From still boiling hot Tokyo! 秋が来ない。。。＠東京

はじめまして、早稲田大学のＴです。
本部の情報センターで２週間のインターンシップをさせていただいています。

広報の役割を担う情報センターは常に電話が鳴っているような忙しい部署で、特に今は重要なイベントである基金賞の直前で大忙しです。そんな時期でも、部署の皆さんはわからないことは丁寧に教えて下さり、日々ランチまで企画していただき、色々とお仕事も下さるので、とても充実した毎日を送っています。最初はかなり堅苦しい、お役所的な(？)職場を想像して緊張していたのですが、実際入ってみると、明るく元気な雰囲気です♪

Hello.
I’m a student of Waseda University, working here at the Japan Foundation Information Center through internship program for 2 weeks. The Japan Foundation is the organization I have always always been curious about (since primary school!), so I was very much excited when I heard about this internship program. Everyone here is sooooo nice and working hard every day. Although I imagined the “atmosphere” (Japanese people love this word, “Fu-n-i-ki”) of the office was more formal before coming here, it is actually very cheerful, so I really love it!

さて、せっかくのブログなので、今回は国際交流基金の舞台裏情報をお届けしようと思います（怒られたらどうしよう・・・どきどき）。本部の中で、私が一番気に入っているのが『階段』です。昨年の厳しい節電時期のなごり、だそうですが・・・１階上がるごとに思わず笑ってしまうようなメッセージが書いてあるのです。
By the way, today, I am going to show the inside of the head office where the Information Center is located. My favorite place in this building is stairs. Each floor has a unique poster which really makes me laugh!

楽しくなってきます。これなら節電でエレベーターが使えなくても、毎日明るい気分で過ごすことができますよね。
Aren't they sweet? Apparently those signs are remains from the last year's strict electricity saving after the 3.11 disaster in East Japan. Such strict energy saving is not required now, but many people choose to use stairs this year as well.

こんなすてきな国際交流基金のインターンもあとわずか。しっかり頑張りたいと思います。

I have just realized that I only have 3 more days to go… time flies here…

みなさん、はじめまして。立命館大学国際関係研究科の中村です。
私は、国際交流基金の情報センターで8月6日から31日までインターンシップを体験中です。

インターンシップでは、国際交流基金賞の業務のお手伝いや広報のお仕事のお手伝いなどいろいろなことをさせてもらい、毎日、新しいことを楽しく経験させてもらっていまーす。

日常業務での電話の取次ぎにはまだ慣れなくて、電話が鳴るたびドキっとします（笑）。
これもいい経験になりました。
メールや文章の書き方、言葉遣い、電話の受け答えやかけ方など、基本的なことなんですが、初めてづくしで、毎日本当に勉強になっています。

職員の中には外国人の方もいらっしゃって、高度な日本語にとても驚きました!!
職員のみなさんもとっても優しくて、職場の雰囲気はとてもいいです。
初めてここに来たときはとても緊張していたので、みなさんが優しく接してくださり、とても嬉しかったです。

実際に業務に携わり、国際交流基金は日本の文化や伝統を海外に広め、日本と海外をつなぐ重要な役割を担っているのだと改めて実感できました。
日本の外交関係を考える上でも、経済や安全保障といったハードパワーはもちろん重要だと思いますが、文化・芸術や伝統等の交流といったソフト面の重要さを改めて感じました。

今回のインターンシップでは、学生では普段経験することのできない貴重な経験をさせていただきました。
情報センターの皆様には、大変お世話になりました。とても感謝しています。
残りの1週間も最後まで頑張り、自分の研究に役立てたいと思います。

Hi, everyone, my name is Aoi Nakamura.
I’m a student of Graduate School of International Relations in Ritsumeikan.
I’m working for the Japan Foundation Information Center (JFIC) through an internship program from 6th to 31st of August.

Now I’m working as an assistant on the project of “The Japan Foundation Awards”, which is one of the biggest projects at the Japan Foundation.
Every day, every action is brand-new experiences for me.
For example, I’m learning how to write business e-mails and answer phone calls…something like that. I’m still not used to picking up phone calls. Every time a telephone rings, I get a little bit nervous. Ha ha!!
However, all the things are good experiences for me, I think.

A Swiss is working for the Information Center. I’m impressed to see him speaking very good Japanese!! All the members here at the JFIC are kind to me. On the first day I came here to work as an internship student, I was very nervous. But I got relaxed quite soon as everyone was nice to me.

I have again realized that the Japan Foundation plays an important role to promote Japanese culture and tradition around the world.
I personally believe that economies and security are important when thinking of Japanese diplomacy, but exchanges in the fields of culture, arts and tradition are also essential.

In this internship, I have experienced very valuable things that I can’t in my daily student life. Thank you so much to all the members of the JFIC!!

I’ll do my best during the last week and bring my experience into my research.

以前、工場として使われていたモスクワ市のとあるイベント会場で８月１１日に行われた日本文化イベント「ジャパン・デー」を紹介したいと思います。
国際交流基金は折り紙と書道のワークショップ、映画上映会、世界遺産パネル巡回展を担当しました。

折り紙、書道を体験してみたいという人がどんどん出てきて、大人気でした。

And I would like to start our round-Russia trip with the presentation of the Japan Festival held on the 11 th of August.

JF Moscow Office held the workshop on Origami (traditional Japanese art of paper folding) and Shodō (calligraphy); movies; exhibition of the UNESCO World Heritage photo exhibition.

Origami and Shodō were of great interest to those who came to the event. A lot of people came to try Origami and Shodō.

書道のワークショップが始まる直前に強い雨が降りだしました。屋外で行われたため、日覆いがあったおかげでなんとか続けることができましたが、横から雨が入って、講師の先生の足はびしょびしょだったのです。先生のそばに立って観察していたお客さんは「日本人はさすがに忍耐強いですね」と感心していました。
ワークショップは５人ずつ入れ替わり順番で「花」という字を書く体験をしてもらいました。

It started raining right when the calligraphy workshop was going to start. JF corner was at the shade canopy, and since it has no walls the calligraphy teacher began the explanation while her legs were getting wetter and wetter when one of the participants standing by her and watching the workshop said in admiration: “Here is the representative of truly sturdy Japan”.

We had several groups of 5 participants. Groups were taking turns every 15 minutes in practicing Chinese character "Hana" ("flower").

We came upon this writing (or should I say graffiti) in a restaurant in Singapore two weeks ago. I was already thinking on what to write in my first blog and my sister suggested using this as my inspiration. Let me share our stories from Manila.

2週間前にシンガポールのレストランで、このグラフィッティに出会いました。初めてのアップに何を書こうかなぁとちょうど思っていたところでしたし、妹にこれをインスピレーションとして使ったら？と薦められたので使ってみました〜。皆さん、マニラでの日々をシェアしてみたいと思いませんか？

July is probably one of our busiest months in JFM. Besides the day to day activities, the office was also busy with the events for the Philippines-Japan Friendship Month. One of the most anticipated events during July is the Eiga Sai (Japanese Film Festival). This year’s opening film was “Akunin” (Villain). Choosing the opening film for this year’s film festival became a big challenge for the office; “Departures” last year was such a huge success that we knew we had to have an equally powerful film to open the festival. And we weren’t wrong; the film was well applauded and was the perfect opening for the month-long celebration.

7月はマニラ日本文化センターにとって、一年でたぶん一番忙しい月です。おなじみのイベントに加えて、Philippines-Japan Friendship Month関連イベントでも大忙しでした。7月のイチオシイベントといえば、Eiga Sai（日本映画際）でしょう。今年のオープニング映画は“Akunin”（悪人）でした。実は今年の映画祭のオープニングを飾る映画をどれにするかですごく悩んだんです。というのも、昨年の“Departures”（おくりびと）があまりにも好評だったため、それに負けないくらいパワフルな映画をオープニングに持ってきたかったからです。そして、狙いは的中！！「悪人」は絶賛され、1ヶ月に渡る映画祭のオープニングとしてはバッチリでした！

The next event in our Friendship Month calendar was the traveling exhibit, Sharaku Interpreted by Japan’s Contemporary Artists. The exhibit was a fascinating mixture of Sharaku inspired original works from the Japanese contemporary artists and the Sharaku reproductions by the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints. The audience was not only treated to works that have fascinated a lot of people from other countries but they also got the chance to do some art through Tsuyoshi Ozawa’s “Sharaku Work”. The audience was provided with postcards with drawings made by the audience from other countries and a blank postcard; they were then asked to draw the face of their favorite person. These postcards were then placed inside envelops which will be brought to the next country that the exhibit will visit. It was quite amusing to see the guests concentrate on doing their drawings and seeing the look of joy (or is it misery) at their finished masterpieces.

Friendship Month関連イベントとして、次にご紹介したいのが巡回展「写楽再見」です。展覧会では、日本人現代アーティストが写楽にインスパイアされて制作したオリジナル作品と、アダチ版画研究所が作成した模写品の両方が展示されました。参加者たちは、海外でも好評だった作品に触れるだけでなく、小沢剛さんの参加型アートイベント「写楽プロジェクト」も楽しんでいました。展覧会では、フィリピン以外の国で開催された展覧会の参加者がすでに描いたポストカードと真っ白なポストカードを渡し、好きな人の顔を描くようにと参加者にお願いしてみました。その後、ポストカードは封筒に入れられ、次に展覧会が巡回する国へと発送される予定です。参加者の皆さんが絵を描くのに夢中になったり、完成した自分の作品を見て喜んだり、残念そうにしているのを見るのはとってもおもしろかったですよ〜。

Another event that we had last July was the Aki & Kuniko Concerts and Workshops. We were very lucky to have the acoustic duo back in Manila not just to perform and wow the Filipino audience with their exquisite music but to also share their craft, experience and love for music through their workshops. The duo was able to give the students a peek at how they were able to combine koto and guitar to create music that is distinctively Aki & Kuniko. After 3 cities, 5 concerts, 2 workshops and endless hours of traveling (and waiting in airports), the project was indeed exhausting but like all events, the welcome and applause given to our artists, the interest that the students showed during the workshops and the feedback that we received after and makes all the work (and traveling) worth it.
7月にはもうひとつ、「Aki & Kuniko Concerts and Workshops」というイベントがありました。このアコースティックデュオをマニラに再びお招きすることができ、とってもラッキーでした〜。Aki & Kunikoは、すばらしい音楽性でフィリピンの観客を魅了し、ワークショップを通じて、その高い技術と経験、そして音楽に対する愛情を表現してくれました。琴とギターを組み合わせることで、Aki & Kunikoにしか生み出すことができない音楽をどのように創り出していくのか、学生さんたちに垣間見せてくれました。3都市でコンサートを5回、ワークショップを2回開催し、気が遠くなるような距離を移動し、その上、空港での待ち時間などなど、クタクタになるようなプロジェクトでした。けれど、すべてのイベントがそうであるように、アーティストたちが温かく迎え入れられ、賞賛されたこと。学生さんがワークショップに興味を持ってくれたこと。イベントを終えていいフィードバックを得たこと。そのことですべての苦労（移動も含めて）が報われました。

Do you know KIZUNA project??

はじめまして！
SNS新メンバーのスティービー＠夏真っ盛りの東京です。日米センターという部門で働いています。

今回は、なんと言っても自分が担当している「キズナプロジェクト」について紹介をさせてください。

このプロジェクトは、昨年3月11日の大震災の復興支援を目的として、世界の1万人規模の青少年が学校交流などを通して震災の理解を深めたり、被災地でボランティア活動をしたりします。

その中で、ぼくは日本とアメリカの2国間を担当しているのですが、日米だけでも、2000人を超える学生が交流するんです！

第一弾として、アメリカの高校生1000人が来日した様子を写真で紹介しますね。

This is Stevie, a new member of this SNS blog team!

I’m working for the Center for Global Partnership (CGP) where promoting collaboration between the people of Japan, the United States, and beyond in order to address issues of global concerns.

This time, I really want to introduce my project ‘KIZUNA!!’

KIZUNA means ‘BOND’, a project which contributes to “reconstruction open to the world” from the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred on last March 11th through youth exchanges. Approximately 10,000 high school and college students from the mainly devastated regions are invited for the period of a year to engage in volunteer activities and participate in exchange programs.

Among this huge project, I’m responsible for Japan and the U.S part. In spite of only these two countries, there will be over 2,000 students to be exchanged.

Let me show you some pictures of the very first project ‘Short Visit to Japan’ by 1000 American High School Students during this June and July.
